Seating & Mobility Assessments

At Propel Physiotherapy, we have extensive experience conducting seating and mobility assessments, and prescribing appropriate seating and mobility devices. We strive to help our clients achieve their goals by providing thorough assessments, and using the findings to match our clients with the mobility aids that will help them meet their goals.

We have physiotherapists that are Assistive Devices Program (ADP) Authorizers, experienced in complex seating systems as well as straightforward prescriptions. Equipment prescribed may include manual and/or power wheelchairs, seating systems, walkers, rollators, canes, and scooters.

Seating and Mobility Assessments at Propel Physiotherapy

Client history
Medical status, previous injuries or surgeries, and history of falls or other mobility-related accidents are determined.

Home and/or work environment
Home or work environment is often assessed in order to determine accessibility and compatibility with proposed mobility equipment. Suggestions can often be made by the physiotherapist for simple ways to make the home environment safer when using a mobility aid.

Physical assessment
Range of motion, strength, static and dynamic balance, motor control, pain, muscle tone, skin integrity, vision, gait pattern, endurance, upper and lower extremity function, and current mobility status are among assessment areas.

Current equipment
Wheelchairs, seating systems and ambulation aids currently in use are reviewed to determine which components worked well for the client, and which were problematic.

Client goals
Functional and mobility goals must be understood by the physiotherapist in order to ensure that the prescribed equipment will match the needs of the client. Caregiver needs are also considered in the prescription process.

Funding
Applications for funding of mobility devices can be made to the Assistive Devices Program (ADP), as many of our therapists are Registered Authorizers with the Ambulation Aids, Wheelchairs and Positioning Devices/Seating Program at the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care. Applications for funding to third party payers such as auto insurance and WSIB can also be made by our physiotherapists, as appropriate.

Education
Clients are always educated in the safe and appropriate use of their equipment, including general maintenance. When manual wheelchairs are prescribed, advanced wheelchair skills, such as managing ramps and curbs, are taught as needed.

Follow-up
Once equipment has been delivered, the physiotherapist will ensure that it matches the specifications of the prescription, and that it is meeting the client’s needs as intended. When adjustments or modifications are required, the physiotherapist will liaise with vendors and technicians to ensure that the needed changes are made without delay.
